Stress Relief Strategies

Stress is becoming one of the biggest health epidemics that is affecting our society today.  With workloads increasing and competition becoming vast, many are finding themselves unable to cope with the pressure and the stress of the daily grind.

I am hoping to share with you some tips and strategies to help you overcome stress or at least learn to manage it, before it affects your health and long term well being.

Exercise is one of the best ways to combat stress as it helps your body to release happy endorphins.  These cheerful chemicals will help you feel more relaxed and less anxious and maybe even a little happier.  Exercise can be done anywhere, if you are not a member of a gym don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to exercise at home.  You could do an aerobic DVD or jog around the block, as long as you raise your heart rate and continue to exercise for a period of more than 15 minutes, your body will release your happy hormones.  Making exercise part of your weekly routine will soon start to show health benefits alongside the benefits of lowering your stress levels.

Another stress relief strategy is to find some “me” time.  Allow yourself to have at least 5 minutes in a quiet, comfortable room, away from distraction.  Sit quietly and start relaxing, concentrate on your body’s movements.  Feel your breathing and relax your shoulders.  You could even listen to some calming music during this time.  Another idea is to use some aroma therapy during your quiet time.  Oils known to relax and de-stress are: Camomile, Lavender, Tangerine and Ylang-Ylang.

The last stress relief strategy I will share with you is communication.  Above all else, do not wait until you can’t cope before seeking help.  If you feel that you are taking too much on, ask for help.  Prevention can be more beneficial in the long term than the cure.
