Stress in the Workplace
Although working in an environment where there is some pressure is good for motivation and productivity, it can also be harmful if it becomes too much for individuals to cope with.
If you feel that your work environment is becoming too stressful, I can tell you a few ideas which may help you to be able to cope with the pressure a little more.
Firstly you must learn to recognise when you have too much to do. It is so easy to become the “yes” man/woman. Learn to say “no” occasionally too. You will not lose respect or credibility from your colleagues but you will keep your work load at a more manageable level, thus reducing your stress levels.
Become an expert at time management. Look at your tasks for the day and allocate a time slot for each, this way you will stay ahead, try to avoid distractions and learn how to prioritise your work loads, leaving the least important jobs till last.
Make your environment at work more suitable for you. Adjust your chair, arrange your desk, and make them comfortable to you. Make sure that everything you may need is at hand. Practise breathing exercises if you feel that you are becoming irritated or stressed. Avoid confrontation, if you feel the urge to stress get up and take a five minute walk, even if it’s along a couple of corridors, just make sure you give yourself a time-out of the situation.
Lastly, try a little humour. Sometimes a giggle or laugh with your work colleagues can be just enough to loosen those shoulders and release some of the tension that you may be feeling.
Don’t forget, after an extremely stressful day at the office, when you get home have a lovely relaxing bath and take some “me” time. Tomorrow is another day and we can start all over again.
